30 Days of TV Meme - Day 17

Angels in America and The Thorn Birds

I refuse to pick one for this because both of these, have touched me and affected me so deeply.

As a recovering Catholic (and someone who went to Catholic school longer than they didn't), the idea of a priest struggling between his vows and love just hits some serious kinks for me. I usually don't dig those kind of relationships but in the book, it's clear that at the start, the age difference between Father Ralph and Meggie is that of a big brother and sister type. He leaves before she hits puberty and it would be weird. When he returns, well she is completely changed. She's a woman. And for the first time, he has to pick between God and love. Just adore it. And holy shit, for that idiot who said gay men can't play straight, watch Richard Chamberlain. Holy crap. Between the mini-series and the book...yeah, it was my first wank material. I'm full admitting that. LOL

Angels in America, totally different side of life. I was OBSESSED with the play from the moment it came out. I have three copies, one signed by Tony Kushner. For my Theatre Dynamics class, I picked as my final project. I casted it, staged it, I had so many ideas. So when HBO announced it with such a fucking incredible cast, I was hooked. I pre-ordered the damn DVD. I can't watch it as often as I would like because it guts me. Some of the scenes hit me on such a personal level, as someone who has watched friends ravaged by AIDS before the cocktail. It's just beautiful and touching and I can't say enough about it. A must see, whether in play or series form.

I absolutely LOVE Angels in America! &hearts When I was real big on my Emma Thompson kick, I watched this series and just fell in love with it. You're so right about the cast. Just frakking brilliant!

Really the cast was just so pitch perfect, and I have seen it a number of times with a number of people. I just really wish more people enjoyed it. Most people seemed to shy away because of the subject matter.

I understand that. People are always so shy about things of that matter and never seem to want to discuss it or talk about it, but I'm not and I think it's something that should certainly be addressed all the time. I watched it alone though.

I actually have never seen Lonesome Dove. I'm not much on Westerns in general so I wasn't interested. But I might check it out cause well, you're awesome and you have good taste.

I should grab The Thornbirds at some point. There's no reason in the world I wouldn't love it. It basically hits all my kinks.

Angels in America breaks my heart. I've only ever watched it all the way through once cause I feel waaaay to depressed afterwards. I usually have to go watch something stupid like Tiny Toons afterwards to cheer myself up. But I do love it.
Kellyxlivvielockex on July 14th, 2010 05:44 am (UTC)
I DO THE SAME THING!

Honest to god, it guts me so bad, I have to watch something lighter to get me over it. But it's the good kind of gutting. A sign of a great work of art.

It really is a beautiful piece of performance, but I just cannot handle it more than one every few years.

OMG, The Thornbirds! <3333 I have yet to watch the miniseries (it seems to have been taken off YT, boo), but I LOVED the book, and Ralph/Maggie...it seems so wrong, describing it to people, "Yeah this priest falls in love with someone he meets when she's only like 10 and he's in his 20s", but I agree, it's not really sexual until later, more he's fond of her in a platonic way....it's such a beautiful and heartbreaking story though, and I agree, it is a little strange as a Catholic to be all rooting for him to break his vows and be with her, lol....

True story, I re-read the book every single Christmas without fail. I love it that much. Usually I wouldn't go for these kind of stories but man, something about it just gets to me.

If you want, PM me your address, I will burn you a copy from my DVD set.
