30 Days of Tv Meme - Day 01

I could have picked any of a number of shows for this. Rome, Deadwood, Popular, Grosse Pointe, Pushing Daises, Profit, American Gothic, Cupid, Miracles, Dirt, Greg the Bunny (and if you are going to put Warren the Ape on MTV, bring back Greg!), Carnivale, Freaks and Geeks, The Middleman, Point Pleasant, So NoTORIous, The Tick (Live Action and Animated), Port Charles, Moonlight, Valentine

My DVD collection reads of shows that have been cancelled WAY before their time. My husband jokes that if you want a show to get cancelled, just have Kelly like it. But this one...this is one that I am willing to bet NOBODY on my flist has heard of.

Starved.

As a lot of you know, I have an eating disorder. I've had it for over a decade now and while it's manageable, I still have a lot of food issues, I still go to therapy for it. It's taken me years just to admit that I am a woman, I have curves, I am allowed to eat. This icon *points* is not something I would have been able to have 10 years ago.

Outside of reality shows like Intervention (which goes WAY over the top with it, same with Oprah), I've never seen eating disorders realistically portrayed on tv. Most fanfic that has characters with an ED, they get it all wrong. Lifetime movies are so over the top. And let's be honest, most of the time, the character affected is female.

Not with Starved, which is why I loved it. Not only was it very realistic to my own personal experiences with having an ED, it also had THREE men (one of them of color). The writer, Eric Schaeffer, suffered through his own ED. He turned his real life experience into an incredible work of fiction. He not only wrote about it from a place of comedy and healing, he also starred in the show as Sam. There is one scene where Sam has put sweets in the garbage but he goes back and eats them out of the trash anyway. I've done that. I've had to put Comet cleanser on binging foods to keep myself from going through the trash to eat them.

It only had seven episodes before it was cancelled and you can find all the episodes on YouTube. I haven't watched it since it was cancelled but I do remember that I was pretty upset when it was. The group of friends reminded me of a lot of people in my group therapy settings. We had anorexics, bulimics, compulsive overeaters. I will tell you one thing, if you get a group of people with EDs together, all they talk about is food. The show got that one right for sure.

I vaguely remember Starved...I think. We didn't get USA fr the longest time.

I'm going to steal this meme though! It looks like FUN!

It's so much fun! I was waiting to start it on the first of June so I had a full 30 days.

If I remember right, it was on FX. FX/Fox has a history of cancelling the shows I like too. LOL

You have to do this meme! We can be meme twins then! LOL

And you should watch it. I think (if I remember right) the episodes are like 30 min and there is only 7 of them.

That sounds like such a bullshit reason because the group I was in at the time, we actually watched episodes and talked about it, relating personal experiences to what happened in the show. I don't see how it was offensive if it was true, you know?

They probably couldn't get an audience, wanted to cancel it, and tried to come up with a more PC reason.

Never heard of this show, I might have to add it to my list. :)

Your icon is made of win.

It goes really fast because it's only 7 episodes. Thank god for YouTube.

My icon was made from art by someone on The Judgement of Paris Forum

I'm pretty new to your f-list, so I didn't know that about you, but I'm pretty damn impressed with you for sharing so openly about it.

Also? That show sounds interesting, especially in looking at the characters shown, whom I wouldn't have necessarily expected to be chosen for a show about eating disorders. It's suprising, in a good way. I may have to look for that show online somewhere. It's definitely a topic I can relate to, in my own way.

Thanks for the post.

Luckily, someone put all the episodes on YouTube. I think I'm going to have to rewatch them, just to see if it's as great as I remember it being. LOL

As for my ED, a few years back, I wouldn't have told anyone. But now, I've been in therapy for so long, so many groups, that talking about it is second nature. I found that being so open about it has allowed a lot of people to come to me to speak about their own struggles and I've been able to help them to seek treatment.

I wouldn't wish this on ANYONE, that is for sure. So if I can help people by talking about it, I will. :)

P.S. I've said this before, but I love your user pic. I find it empowering.

Thank you. It is one of my favorites and I've had it since I came to LJ. Feel free to snag it if you have open spaces. It's there for the taking.

Wow talk about completely misunderstanding your icon before this post. *iz a dumbass*

You speaking freely about ED makes me want to check this show out, thank you for the rec :)

Aww, it's okay, bb. :) I mean, it is just a silouette there. Not a lot of background to go with it.

And it's taken over a decade to get to this point, to talk about it, but I figure if it helps others, go for it.

=[ *HUG* People can't handle reality like true hardcore down to earth reality and that's probably why it got cancelled but I'm still sorry it did.
Kelly: VM: Fight Crimexlivvielockex on June 4th, 2010 06:48 pm (UTC)
So true. I don't think people like it when life is mirrored at them. They want an escape or something over the top. When it's real and compelling, people tend to turn away, which sucks.
bucybuce7590: TB Eric/Godricbucybuce7590 on June 5th, 2010 02:51 pm (UTC)
Yeah, =[ unfortunately they can't handle the truth. Hits too close to home I guess. I personally like it better when it's something that hits close to home. I like things and characters I can actually connect with. I think that's why I still like Buffy (or any Whedon show for that matter) so much. Cause they act and react like normal people would even the vampires or bad guys. But I guess most people just want to watch things that take them far far away from real life.
