Heads up for fanartists
Okay, found out two things today that I know will be helpful for fanartists. If you don't use photobucket, the second one doesn't apply to you but the first one does.

Whenever you post an image to LJ, whether you change your layout, post art in unlocked posts, upload new userpics, add sidebars, post unlocked voting in communities, post unlocked pimps in communities, anything image related in public space, it comes up on the LJ RSS Feed. And apparently now, there are several websites that repost the feed, which just links your images. An icon I had in an icontest was hotlinked on the site fuzzysquid and toothpaste for dinner. My views went from a few hundred to over 25K.

To opt out of the feed:

Make sure you are logged into LJ:

Go to the command console: http://www.livejournal.com/admin/console/

Enter this command exactly:
set latest_optout yes

Hit execute.

This is just to opt YOUR JOURNAL out of the feed. If you want to opt a community that you own out of the feed:

Make sure you are logged into LJ:

Go to the command console: http://www.livejournal.com/admin/console/

Enter this command exactly:
set for communityname latest_optout yes

Hit execute.

However, I know for sure that it WILL NOT opt you out if someone else posts say, an icon in an icontest voting if the post is unlocked. Owners need to opt their communities out themselves or lock all posts.

And the second thing has to do with photobucket. Apparently, they are compressing images, even as small as icons, as they transition to high res capabilities. That means your art will come out blurry.

From them via iconrants

We run compression on our site in order to balance the cost of bandwidth and storage while providing a variety of useful features and overall site performance for our users.

Within the next few weeks we will include a "High Resolution" setting in the upload tab that will allow for storage of the high resolution version of your image, still, you may notice that the album displayed and linked images are the compressed versions. In this scenario, downloading the image from your Photobucket account should download the high resolution version.

Even though you should expect compression to occur on our site in general, you may want to try to re-upload any images you are concerned about using the resolution settings (e.g. 1024 x768) instead of the file-size limit settings (e.g. 1MB). This may preserve the quality closest to the original in the short-term.

The solution seems to be, if you don't already, to save ALL images in .png form because when they are compressed, it doesn't effect the quality as much as it does when a .jpg is compressed.

If anyone has any other information that can be helpful on this post, please let me know ASAP! I don't have all the information, just what I have found with a little digging this morning. Thanks.

Thanks for all the info, chica! I had no idea this was happening. I opted myself, angeluncensored, ats_hush, ca_stillness and my icon comm out. I guess at AU, CA and ats I'll have to locked challenges and voting posts from now on, huh? Would that be easier?

This photobucket deal is confusing. I already do my icons or bigger graphics in .png. They are coming out blurry? I haven't experienced that, yet. I'll have to check right now.

It sounds like opting out is all you need to do as long as you're the one doing the posting, Nikki. I don't think you need to lock your posts as well. Or does it mean if you just copy and paste the urls for the images to put in your voting table, then it's like the person posted the image themselves? *scratches head*

You're absolutely right! Where is my mind, today? lol Then the comms are ok, then. That's a relief :)

The way that I understood it is that journal names and communities function the same way in the feed. So if you opt out with your journal, you need to also opt out with your communities as well. Then if anyone posts in that community, it will not appear in the feed.

That also means if you post in a community still on the feed, you are going to want to lock that post (i.e. pimp posts). So I locked my journal, Still Grrr, and some other comms. But if I post to say insertnameheregraphics, I will want to lock my post to protect it from the feed.

My icons and fanarts have been okay so I'm not sure if they are only targeting high bandwidth users or not. It seems to be random and considering all the complaints they are no doubt getting, it wouldn't surprise me if they stopped this.

As far as opting out, when you opt your own journal out, it means your journal doesn't show on the feed. You have to opt out communities as well, which means the communities (no matter who posts in them) don't appear in the feed. So no need to lock posts as long as you opted out the communities.

That also means if you post in a community still on the feed, you are going to want to lock that post (i.e. pimp posts). So I locked my journal, Still Grrr, and some other comms. But if I post to say insertnameheregraphics, I will want to lock my post to protect it from the feed.

No problem! I just hope that it helps avoid people having the same problem I did!

Jeez, this sucks.

I did the opt out for my journal a long time ago already. There was something similar happening back then; I don't remember exactly. Now, I did it for the graphics journal as well. Better to be safe.

And PB? They annoy me already anyway. But this is so not cool. I make my icons in .png anyway. Now that I think about it, I read something recently. Someone said that whenever a .jpg is saved/downloaded it loses quality. I don't know, though, if that's a PB thing or in general.
I don't really want to save my wallpapers in .png and my photos are in .jpg anyway. That would be a whole lot of trouble and time to change. Time that I don't want to spend on it.

Thanks for the info. :)

Hi. I hope I'm not breaking the mysterious rules of LJ etiquette by replying to this five-day-old post.

Nothing loses quality in download, unless you have a stone age ISP which compresses images smaller before sending them to you (usually to make dial-up "faster"). Even then, it's not technically happening in download. If you save a .jpg by just saving the file in your browser or download program, you should get exactly, bit for bit, the file that's on the server.

If you paste a .jpg into an image editor and resave, that applies .jpg's lossy compression to it all over again. The image loses quality each time that's done to it, because each time it starts from what's left of the image after the last time. If Photobucket tampers with the compression, that does the same thing.

So if you keep avoiding photobucket, your .jpgs should be fine as long as you're not planning to edit and resave them later.

Oooh, thank you so much for this information! It was really helpful!

That all makes sense. Thanks for that. It was just something I read. Everything's possible these days. It's good to know better now. :)
Kelly: Cheerleaderxlivvielockex on August 26th, 2009 06:31 pm (UTC)
I am in the same boat as you. I have over a thousand icons in .jpg and I don't want to resave them and reupload them. It would take me for the rest of my life.

Now I'm saving them to .png and looking around for a new place to host things. I might just end up paying for some webspace and just use it solely for icons. Such a pain in the ass. Or maybe just make myself a coppermine account or something. I don't know. I'm just so mad still.
Katie: readingkatiesangels on August 26th, 2009 06:42 pm (UTC)
For icons it's commonly said in most icon comminities I'm a member of that saving in .png is the thing you should do. Especially quality-wise. They aren't that much bigger in size, I'd say.

Thank you! this is very useful! i have wondered how come i have searched for my username and a lot of my stuff came up. going to opt out of the feed now! <3

as far as the icons/pic becoming blurry - i have not noticed this.. and i always do jpg. i always upload smaller versions of pictures if i do at all. hmm.
Kelly: Cheerleaderxlivvielockex on August 26th, 2009 06:34 pm (UTC)
As far as I can tell, the blurry thing is relatively new for photobucket. I haven't seen it hit my account yet but I have seen it occur in other accounts.

And honestly, if it wasn't for the stats option of photobucket, I would have no idea my stuff was being hotlinked like that.

I'd like to repost part of this, with credit and a link back. I saw a chain of about three other people doing it that lead me back here, but I don't see anyone asking in the comments so I thought I would.
Kelly: DW: 10/Donnaxlivvielockex on August 20th, 2009 05:17 pm (UTC)
No problem. Repost, link, just spread the word around. I can't be the only one that was having INSANE amount of icon views. :)

thank you for explaining.
I'm not sure if i had a problem with that, i had some problems with people stealing my graphics. Maybe this was one of the reasons. So thank you! :)
Kelly: Cheerleaderxlivvielockex on August 26th, 2009 06:36 pm (UTC)
It very well could have been. I know that a few fanpop users will friend graphic comms and journals and take art to repost without credit. I would check your flist and your graphics comm, make sure that everyone seems legit i.e. entries in their journals.
